The Patriot Act

is supposedly a critical tool for fighting terrorists. Many Dem's voted for it. And now want to register surprise that the Bush Admin is using it to gain political advantage?

It's clear there was a high level plan (conspiracy?) to use the provisions contained in the PA to circumvent established congressional procedures for appointing US Attorneys. It may not have been illegal but...man is it scummy.

More importantly, it raises new questions about the Bush propensity for misusing new war powers...real or imagined. When the NSA eavesdropping practices were brought to light, the Admin was outraged that anyone would suggest that they were overusing a tactic that should be utilized only under the strictest oversight. It was imperative to have the new power in the PA and they only wanted it to fight terror. Only a partisan hack would believe that Bush would over indulge....right? Well, the PA pretty much gave carte blanche and Bush is charging away.

My question is...for what other purely political purposes is the PA being used for? It cannot be a isolated incident and if not for the general clumsiness and incompetence of most things Bush.....it would have passed unnoticed. Their ham handedness is almost always their undoing.
